“A Beautiful Planet”-A review

July 8, 2016

A Beautiful PlanetBy Howard M. Wedgle

I went to the Phipps IMAX 3D Theatre this past Wednesday for the 1:00 showing of “A Beautiful Planet”. Before I talk about the movie, I must tell you in advance to go early, if you are going during the daytime. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is very busy and parking is a little bit difficult.

I haven’t been to an IMAX movie here in quite some time. I figured that readers of this newsletter might not have been to this theater in awhile as well. Since I arrived in the theater at around 12:55pm, I didn’t get a seat in the middle, but still good. The theater was filled with grandparents, parents and kids.

The only real critique I have is the volume of the narration by Jennifer Lawrence. It really wasn’t loud enough, but the voice-overs from the astronauts were much better.

If you read the newsletter from this week, you’ll know that I have an interest in tracking the flyovers of the International Space Station, where most of the movie is filmed. The film shows incredible views of the Earth as well as a small insight into life on board the ISS, one of which is watching Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti drink one of the first espressos ever brewed in space. Buona Salute!

I think the biggest message of the movie, which is only about 45 minutes, is the environmental message with some politics thrown in. We have a lot of problems, but as Barry “Butch” Wilmore, one of the astronauts who helped film this movie said: “Life on Earth is like life on a space station. We all need to work together to keep it running”.

Serious Music

May 26, 2016

By Marilyn Kopelman

A day before our sojourn to hear the Colorado Symphony’s yearly performance of Carmina  Burana, I received a phone call from my kids asking if I could please take our granddaughter  Reagan for an overnight that very same Saturday evening.  Without a moment’s hesitation I said “yes!”  I love taking this adorable 8 year old from her parents any chance I get.  The thought of snuggling her – no holds barred – without strings or instructions, was music to my ears. Of course I would cancel our symphony  tickets and delight in her company at our home instead. But this was not to be the case. Much to our surprise, Reagan wanted to accompany us to the symphony. In fact she pleaded that she didn’t want to spoil our plans and would sit extra still as the music played.  Who could resist.  She would accompany us on our Saturday night outing. [Read more…]

Denver Zoo welcomes Gerenuk

May 2, 2016

GerenukThe Denver Zoo welcomed Echo, a 3 year old gerenuk.  He just arrived from the Phoenix Zoo to be paired with 7 year old female Squirt, through a recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which ensures healthy populations and genetic diversity among zoo animals.  Zookeepers say Echo is very mellow and took seeing snow for the first time in stride. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo-A review

April 26, 2016

Cheyenne Mountain ZooBy Howard M. Wedgle

Besides the very cold temperatures we endured today in Colorado Springs (around 48 degrees) the zoo was enjoyable.  Although far smaller than the Denver Zoo, it seems that I was a lot closer to the animals, albeit, behind thick glass or fencing.  You can even purchase a little bit of lettuce and feed it to the giraffes. The zoo keeps 17 giraffes and even has a breeding program. The habitats are more condensed, but more engaging to the visitor.

The Jungle Book

An epic adventure about Mowgli, a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger ShereKhan, who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera, and the free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

Orangutan Robin celebrates 40th birthday at Denver Zoo

April 4, 2016

Denver Zoo logoDenver Zoo celebrated the birthday of male orangutan Robin, who turned 40-years-old on Sunday, March 27! This is a big milestone as the median age of Sumatran orangutans in zoos is 28. Zookeepers placed streamers and enrichment – including LEGOs – throughout his indoor exhibit. He also enjoyed fruits, veggies, seeds, nut butters, as well as a special birthday “cake” made of primate biscuits. Robin has lived in the Great Apes building in Primate Panorama since it opened in 1996 and is described by his keepers as having a sweet personality.
