A Presentation of the Colors at the beginning of last Tuesday night’s Rockies vs. Cincinnati Reds game was brightened by the voices of the Colorado Jewish Youth Chorus who proudly belted out the National Anthem on the left outfield grass. Ranging from 3rd to 12th grades, the youngsters were led by Cantor Uri Ayn Rovner of Calliope Music Studios, and the fans were generous in their applause. The kids were thrilled to appear before the hometown crowd. We and the other grandparents and parents of the Chorus members were particularly moved by the children’s performance and were wildly enthusiastic in expressing our appreciation of their efforts. The kids may have even been a little embarrassed by our flailing of arms and screams for their attention as “so proudly we hailed.”
Inspired by our kids, the Rockies belted out a Coors field record 7 home runs, including a Grand Slam by Charlie Blackmon with a total of 17 runs to give them a win of 17 to 4. The game was a record- breaker , perhaps even reflecting a touch of Divine intervention for our team.
Our 8 year old granddaughter, the smallest of the Youth Chorus performers, was so excited by the opportunity to sing and the response of the fans to the Rockies’ repeated extra base hits that she cheered non-stop throughout the game, stopping only sporadically to down mouthfuls of peanuts, ice cream and pretzels. Of course we gave her a little help in that arena, too.
When asked if she was ready to leave with us after the seventh inning stretch, Reagan bid us goodbye and stayed with her mom and dad to the final out of the ninth inning, once again proving that when our “get up and go, got up and went,” she was still in the game.
