InSight Lander-An interview with DMNS curator Dr. Steve Lee

December 19, 2018

Since the dawn of the Space Age, only Earth and its moon have been visited by more spacecraft than Mars. Beginning in 1960, about 40 missions (with about 60 spacecraft) have been launched toward the Red Planet. About 40 percent have succeeded, at least in part. Though the spectacular successes make it look easy, exploring Mars has proven to be one of the most difficult endeavors humans have ever attempted.

Rogue One-a review

January 15, 2017

By Howard M. Wedgle

For the kid who lives inside of you.

Whether or not you are Star Wars fan, I thought the cinematic process was amazing. I waited until son # came home, while on winter break, to see the movie. We went last night, along with my brother and his daughter and son, to see it at The Continental Theatre. I don’t advise seeing the movie from the 3rd row, which we did. You can’t get the full effect of the movie from that point of view. I should have moved.

A behind the scenes look at Cosmic Journey: A Solar System Adventure

September 28, 2016

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has just finished upgrading the systems of the Gates Planetarium to bring the visitor a more immersive theatre experience. This upgrade is twice as sharp. On September 26th, I sat down with Dan Neafus, the Gates Planetarium Operations Manager. His job is to make sure that you and I walk away from such an experience with wonderment.

The Juno mission-a follow up by Howard M. Wedgle

July 7, 2016

Juno missionI had a great opportunity yesterday to speak with Steve Lee, the curator of Planetary Science at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Michael Hardegree-Ullman, who will be a senior at Rocky Mountain High School in Ft. Collins. Michael is part of a 23 person teen science scholars internship that the museum started a few years back. This program introduces students interested in science careers to various aspects of museum research and/or collections work and helps strengthen investigative and communication skills. It’s a terrific program and opportunity for these young people. Juno enters Jupiter’s orbit by Howard Wedgle

July 5, 2016

Juno missionA thump and the crowd goes wild!

After traveling 1.7 billion miles that began five years ago, Juno successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit to begin using its nine science instruments. This is the farthest a solar-powered spacecraft has traveled. It broke the record, which was held by the European Space Agency’s comet-chasing Rosetta mission, which traveled 492 million miles. Since it was European, I should say 792 million kilometers (instead of miles). [Read more…]

Bridging the gap between generations

July 1, 2016

My two boys, Cashill and Beau, are growing up in a world inundated with technology. From the moment their alarm clock’s glow switches from red to green their life is guided by the many devices that surround them. Despite best efforts on my part, they’ve been navigating my iPhone seamlessly since before their second birthday. They’re as content drawing on the iPad as they are with a marker and paper. When curiosity strikes, their first instinct is to ask Siri.
