Since the dawn of the Space Age, only Earth and its moon have been visited by more spacecraft than Mars. Beginning in 1960, about 40 missions (with about 60 spacecraft) have been launched toward the Red Planet. About 40 percent have succeeded, at least in part. Though the spectacular successes make it look easy, exploring Mars has proven to be one of the most difficult endeavors humans have ever attempted.

High School seniors help in Harvey’s relief efforts

Two old but excitable miners rejoice at the prospect of future riches, even as their daily grind is full of hardship and ill-health. One, enjoying a smoke from his pipe, holds a gold nugget, too small to see, while regaling the other with tales of the many near misses of his long mining career. A behind the scenes look at Cosmic Journey: A Solar System Adventure

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has just finished upgrading the systems of the Gates Planetarium to bring the visitor a more immersive theatre experience. This upgrade is twice as sharp. On September 26th, I sat down with Dan Neafus, the Gates Planetarium Operations Manager. His job is to make sure that you and I walk away from such an experience with wonderment.

ron-blakey-2I attended a lecture from Ron Blakey, professor emeritus at Northern Arizona University. He is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the geologic history of the Colorado Plateau. He retired in 2007. For more than fifteen years, he has meticulously created maps that show how numerous past landscapes gave rise to the region’s stunning geologic formations.
