InSight Lander-An interview with DMNS curator Dr. Steve Lee

December 19, 2018

Since the dawn of the Space Age, only Earth and its moon have been visited by more spacecraft than Mars. Beginning in 1960, about 40 missions (with about 60 spacecraft) have been launched toward the Red Planet. About 40 percent have succeeded, at least in part. Though the spectacular successes make it look easy, exploring Mars has proven to be one of the most difficult endeavors humans have ever attempted.

Degas exhibition coming to DAM

April 26, 2017

(As posted by Denver CBS4)

The Denver Art Museum will be the sole American venue to host a special exhibition from artist Edgar Degas.

The special exhibition, “Degas: A Passion for Perfection,” will showcase more than 100 of his works from 1855 to

1906, including paintings, drawings, pastels, etchings and more.

“Degas: A Passion for Perfection” will be on view at the Denver Art Museum from February 11 to May 20, 2018, following

its debut at the University of Cambridge.

The exhibition will feature works from the DAM’s own collection and from the the Fitzwilliam Museum as well as from other collections around the

world, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil, the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester in New

York, and the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia.

Degas — born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas in 1834 — is generally grouped with the French Impressionists, along with Claude Monet, Pierre-

Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet and many others, but he reportedly did not like the term and instead described his style as “realist.”

Vikings- Beyond The Legend

April 4, 2017

Review by Howard M. Wedgle

DMNS Vikings in Denver, on Friday, March 11, 2017. (Photo by Denver Museum of Nature and Science)

The first impression or realization from the Vikings exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is how little I knew about the people, who originated in Scandinavia during the period 750-1100 CE. The exhibit is spacious with enough room to wander around without bumping into other people. The museum keeps a quasi control over the quantity of people in the room at any given time.

In short, there is something for every age to be intrigued with here.

Gemstone Gold Prospectors

December 27, 2016

By Stephen E. Nash

Two old but excitable miners rejoice at the prospect of future riches, even as their daily grind is full of hardship and ill-health. One, enjoying a smoke from his pipe, holds a gold nugget, too small to see, while regaling the other with tales of the many near misses of his long mining career. The man’s loyal but irascible burro brays its displeasure at hearing, yet again, tales of what might have been. The kneeling second miner pans away, fruitlessly continuing his search. [Read more…]
